Antibiotic resistence of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) and Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) Scientia Agricola
Belém-Costa,Andréa; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
One of the most important problems involving treatments with antibiotics against Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from fishes is that antibiotic resistance develops readily. The antimicrobial activity of chemotherapeutants in isolates from pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) and tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) was tested by the Kirby-Bauer disk method, over Mueller-Hinton surface agar previously inoculated with 100 µL of bacterial suspensions. After regular incubation, isolates from tilapia and pacu were uniformly resistant to amoxicillin, ampicillin, lincomycin, novobiocin, oxacillin, penicillin, and trimetoprim+sulfametoxazole. The A. hydrophila type strain presented resistance to the same antimicrobial substances and also against...

Apparent digestibility of ingredients in diets for Salminus brasiliensis PAB
Braga,Luís Gustavo Tavares; Borghesi,Ricardo; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The objective of this work was to determine the nutritional value of different protein sources for "dourado" (Salminus brasiliensis). Thirty juveniles per group (33.51±1.4 g) were hand fed on a reference diet (70%) added of tested ingredients (30%) and chromium oxide III (0.1%). Apparent digestibility coefficients of the gross energy (ADC GE), crude protein (ADC CP) and amino acids of the tested ingredients were evaluated. Corn gluten meal yielded the best results for ADC GE and ADC CP (95.7 and 96.9%, respectively) amongst plant ingredients. Spray-dried blood meal yielded the best values of ADC GE and ADC CP amongst animal ingredients (94.1 and 96.3%, respectively). Wheat bran yielded poorest ADCs coefficients (77 for ADC GE and 88.2% for ADC CP).

Attractants in plant protein-based diets for the carnivorous largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Ana Maria Barretto de Menezes Sampaio de; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
Adding attractants can improve acceptability of artificial diets by carnivorous fish fry and fingerlings, increasing intake of unpalatable feeds and improving growth rate, while reducing feeding time and feeding wastes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of levels of inclusion of different attractants in plant protein-based diets on the performance of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides. Nine hundred juvenile largemouth bass (26.54 ± 1.53 g) conditioned to accept dry, artificial feed were stocked in 60, 90-L polyethylene tanks (15 fish per group) in a completely randomized design trial (n=3). Fish were fed two daily meals ad libitum at 7h00 and 17h00, for 13 days, with a diet (100% plant protein source) containing either soluble fish protein - SFP...

Clustering of ingredients with amino acid composition similar to the nutritional requirement of Nile tilapia Scientia Agricola
Bicudo,Álvaro José de Almeida; Pinto,Luis Fernando Batista; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The search for balanced diets, which may elicit improved growth of fish, requires appropriate selection of available protein sources. This study aims at clustering feedstuffs according to amino acid profile, determining which ones show essential amino acids (EAA) profiles closer to the ideal dietary amino acids requirements of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and studying the relationship among amino acids feedstuffs groups. Tabled data on EAA more cystine and tyrosine, in relation to lysine contents, of 40 feedstuffs ordinarily used to formulate fish diets were studied. Feedstuffs were grouped according to amino acids profile by cluster analysis of Euclidean distances. The principal components analysis was used to determine the relationship among...

Digestibility and pricing of Chlorella sorokiniana meal for use in tilapia feeds Scientia Agricola
Barone,Rafael Simões Coelho; Sonoda,Daniel Yokoyama; Lorenz,Evandro Kleber; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT: Several microalgae contain in excess of 50 % crude protein with amino acid profile comparable to that of fish meal. In addition, high polyunsaturated fatty acid contents encourage their use in animal feeding and nutrition, particularly in the formulation and processing of aquafeeds. This study aims at estimating the feasibility of Chlorella meal as feed ingredient for the feeding and nutrition of farmed tilapia based upon digestibility data. Juvenile tilapia were stocked in conical-bottomed tanks (200 L) with superficial, continuous water flow, and fed to apparent satiation in three daily meals with a reference diet and a test diet containing 30 % lyophilized Chlorella sorokiniana added of an inert marker. Feces were collected overnight by...

Digestible energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth of pacu ( Piaractus mesopotamicus ): A factorial approach-based model Scientia Agricola
Aguilar,Fredy Armando Aguilar; Mourão,Gerson Barreto; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT: Results of nutrient requirements as determined in dose-response trials are valid only for fish within the same size range of that of experimental model fish. This study used the factorial approach to estimate digestible energy (DE) and digestible protein (DP) requirements for maintenance and growth of pacu ( Piaractus mesopotamicus ). Juvenile pacu (63.5 ± 1.27 g) were stocked in a recirculation system (26.89 ± 0.36 °C) for 58 days, and fed two daily meals. One diet contained 6.96 % lipids (LF) and another 9.98 % lipids (HF), both diets formulated to contain 32 % crude protein, theoretical dietary energy level for maintenance (52.23 kJ DE kg−0.80 d−1), in a completely randomized, 2 × 5 factorial experimental design. The apparent digestibility...

Barone,Rafael Simões Coelho; Lorenz,Evandro Kleber; Sonoda,Daniel Yokoyama; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT: Along the last ten years fish and fishery product trade in Brazil has been on a downward trajectory turning a profit of US$ 98.6 million in 2005 into a loss of US$ 1.25 billion by 2014. On the other hand, the country is a leading producer of grains and has the third largest animal feed industry in the world, which has added 5.5 million hectares of freshwater reservoirs and 3.5 million km2 of an exclusive marine economic zone in the same period, a sizable potential for development of the aquaculture industry. This study aims at unveiling strategies for the reduction of the deficit in the Brazilian seafood trade balance, based on critical analysis of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of imported fishery products. The fish and fishery...

Immunomodulation of Juvenile Pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, by Different β(1-3)(1-6)-D glucan Products BABT
Sabioni,Rafael Estevan; Zanuzzo,Fábio Sabbadin; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
Abstract Stress in intensive fish farming hamper immune function of fish and cause losses by disease outbreaks, a situation that can be minimized, but cannot be completely circumvented, by the use of immunomodulators. Addition of immunomodulators to aquafeeds has thus become a common practice. β-glucan (BG) is one of most studied and effective immunomodulators, aquaculture purposes included. Extracted from cell walls of bacteria, fungi and selected cereals, BG activity depends on the source and extraction methods. This study evaluated effects of two BG products (BG1 and BG2), extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae under varying extraction methods and with different immune activity, on the feeding of pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus juveniles. BG1 provided...

Rodrigues,Ana Paula Oeda; Pauletti,Patricia; Kindlein,Liris; Delgado,Eduardo Francisquine; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon; Machado-Neto,Raul.
Histological responses of the intestine are key for evaluating nutritional value of feed ingredients, since the organ is not only the chief site of feed digestion and nutrient absorption but also plays an important immunological function. Histomorphological alterations were evaluated in the intestine of juvenile striped catfish, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, fed diets containing 0 (control), 10 or 20% inclusion of lyophilized bovine colostrum (LBC), as source of protein or bioactive peptides, for either 30 or 60 days. Fish fed 20LBC presented at 60d a distinct pattern of macrophages and, some of them, higher number of vacuoles in rectum mucosa. The thickness of the muscle layer (TML) in fish fed diets with LBC was higher in the first portion of medium...

Partial substitution of fishmeal with soybean protein-based diets for dourado Salminus brasiliensis Scientia Agricola
Correa,Roselany de Oliveira; Aguilar,Fredy Armando Aguilar; Cruz,Thaline Maira Pachelli da; Sabioni,Rafael Estevan; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT Cost and environmental restrictions limit the use of fishmeal (FM) in aquafeeds and plant protein (PP) sources. Soybean by-products are important alternative; however, their antinutritional factors may reduce fish growth. This study evaluates the effect of FM substitution for PP (soybean meal and soy protein concentrate) in diets of dourado (Salminus brasiliensis), a promising species for fish farming and empirically considered highly tolerant to PP-based diets. A control diet was formulated to contain 20 % of fishmeal and 61 % of plant protein (SBM) and other five diets with decreasing FM graded levels (16 %, 12 %, 8 %, 4 %, 0 %), which were replaced by soybean protein concentrate (SPC), comprising six treatments and four replicates.
